Qui figulo postquam munito intraverit urbem,
Sarcophago contentus erit:
arca est sepulchralis, quam πύελον Graeci et σορὸν dixêre. Graeci enim, qui corpora defunctorum non cremabant, condere ea solebant πυέλοις, ex lapide ut plurimum factis, cui natura est corpora cito absumere. Cuiusmodi erat Assius lapis, quem et σαρκοφάγον, ab edendo carnes, propterca Graeci nuncupârunt, Plin. l. 36. c. 17. In Asso Troadis Sarcophagus lapis fissili venâ scinditur. Ubi quod. fissilem venam vocat, Dioscorides διαφύσεις, item διαζώματα, appellat. Subicit, Corpora defunctorum condita in eo absumi constat, intra XL. diem, exceptis dentibus. Postea vero, Σαρκοφάγοι dicti sunt quihbet mortuorum loculi, etiamsi ex alia materia fierent. Quemadmodum Δελφικαὶ τράπεζαι, quarum facturâ Delphi nobiles, postmodum quilibet abaci, eâ formâ facti, Delphicarum nomen habuêre. Hinc Sarcophagi Porphyretici meminit Anastasius in Silvestro: Hodieque Sarcolium dicunt Galli, quamlibet arcam sepulchralem, voce detortâ ex Sarcophagulus. Proptie vero Sarcophagus dictus est, illa arca, quâ grandiores natu integris corporibus condebantur, in loco commum, vel ante aras. Infantum enim, quibus mortuis nec inferias libarunt, nec eos ante dentes natos ussêre; nulla nec busta, nec Sarcophagi, sed Suggrundiaria, de quibus infra, fuerunt, corporibus eorum in urmilis, quia is vetustior mos, impositis, Thom. Bartholin. de Puerperio Veter. Apud Scriptores Ecclesiae Romanae vox capsam maiorem SS. reliquias continentem nonnumquam notat. Sic Ditmarus l. 6. Sarcophagum ingentem, ad includendas Sanctorum reliquias de argento fecit etc.
